Figuring out how far in between appointments you should go shouldn't feel like a math equation. There is so many key points to think about while you are booking out your next hair appointment, and if one of those points in your mind is, "well I will just call when I am ready." is not a realistic. Let's go over some of the more realistic points that you should think about when you are booking your next appointment!
First, what is your color? Are you one solid color everywhere? Are you a bright highlighted blonde or are you a solid platinum blonde with no dimension? Even with one solid color everywhere, the color you choose makes a difference as well. I will tell you to come in more often to maintain a vibrant copper red versus a deep chocolate brown. This is the first thing you should think about.
Second, what is your natural hair color? What color do you see when your hair starts to grow out from the scalp? Is it a drastic difference from what your hair goal is, or is it pretty similar? Another thing to touch base on is, does your natural color have grey hair sprinkled in or are you 100% natural, solid grey?
Third, make sure your hair color is a realistic one. By realistic, I mean does it correspond well to what your life style is. If you are someone that doesn't want to come in every 4-6 weeks to get their color touched up, then a color that drastically darker or lighter than your natural probably isn't the most realistic color for you. If you are someone that will be on a timed schedule for all of your hair appointments, then a high maintenance color could be a realistic color for you!
Now that we went over some important key points to think about, let's talk about time frame in between appointments. Starting with one solid color all over, this is what your time frame would look like..
1-2 shades lighter or darker than your natural : Every 6-8 weeks
3-4 or more shades darker than your natural : Every 4-6 weeks
Vibrant shades (red, copper, burgundy) : Every 4-5 weeks
Chocolate browns or naturals : Every 6-8 weeks
Blondes (Highlighted, solid or balayage)
Highlighted blondes where you are naturally light : Every 6-8 weeks
Highlighted blondes where you are naturally brunette or darker : Every 4-6 weeks
Solid blonde (Platinum) where you are naturally light : Every 4-6 weeks
Solid blonde where you are naturally brunette or darker : Every 4 weeks
Balayage where you are naturally light : 10-12 weeks
Balayage where you are naturally brunette or darker : 8-10 weeks
Covering Grey
Every 4-6 weeks for a new growth touch up
Now, these are my suggestions to keep your color fresh and to also help myself achieve your desired color as well! Your hair typically only grows about a half an inch a month, but also everyone is different! With that being said, your hair might grow faster which means that you would need to come earlier than some of these time frames! Taking all of this information into account, I hope this helped answer the question you have always asked yourself, "When should I get my hair done again?".
